"Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.” Isaiah 40:26
As Term 2 comes to a close, it is fitting to reflect on a busy and productive 10 weeks that saw a range of initiatives and activities undertaken and implemented. Every one of them is, of course, for the benefit of our students.
Different students will remember the Term for different reasons. Undoubtedly, a highlight of the Term for the Year 11 and 12 students was the first ever SCC Formal. For many, it will have been a debate, a musical performance, a Harry Potter expo, a drama production or a sporting success. For all of them, it will be a learning moment, a lesson or a project that went well.
New at SCC in 2025, and experienced by all students from Year 5-9, was the introduction of our Outdoor Education Camps Program. The students involved will not forget those experiences. Camps and outdoor education are vital parts of growing up and the benefits they provide are enormous. There are no comparable experiences for growth. It is in the outdoors that students get to experience things that are simply not possible at school or at home. Where else other than on camp can young people experience such rich nature and wildlife, where else can they have opportunities to work so closely together and be part of a team, where else can they be engaged in day long walks with a heavy pack on their backs, the sun on their skin and fresh air in their lungs? Only on camp. Camp is also a time for gaining some independence, as for some of the students it is the first time they have been away from home. For all of them, it is a valuable break from screen time.
Our Camps Program culminates in our peak experience in Year 9, which is 4 days in the Flinders Ranges. As I met the Year 9s off the bus as they returned to the College in Week 9, I saw tired bodies and smiling faces. Undeniably, they were all looking forward to getting home, having a shower and sleeping in their own beds. But that is fine – camp is often something that you don’t appreciate in the moment, but later realise how transformative it was. They certainly came back understanding themselves and each other a little better. I heard stories about getting rained on in tents they hadn’t put up correctly, I heard grumbles about sore feet, I was told with pride stories about cooking their own meals. And my favourite stories, the ones that simply would not happen anywhere other than camp, were the ones of laying on their back in the dark, staring with wonder at the multitude of stars in the sky when they were away from the city and the light pollution, and about singing and holding hands in a ring and dancing around the campfire.
We are proud of our Year 9s, and all our students, for the ways in which they have taken risks and experienced success in Term 2. Is it a cliché to say that each of our students in a star in the sky of SCC? I’ll say it anyway.
The school holiday comes at a good time for all of them, and all of us, and wish everyone a great break. We look forward to welcoming students back for Term 3 on Tuesday 22 July.
Stay safe. God bless.
